    As one of the world’s leading global leisure and destination management travel organisations, Kuoni brings together 8 772 (full-time equivalent) of the best and brightest employees drawn from different nationalities and all sorts of diverse cultures and backgrounds. They are the friendly faces and ambassadors who welcome our customers in exotic destinations, our most direct link to hotel partners; they represent us to other business partners and the public at large. Kuoni depends on its employees to be its face and voice and seeks their commitment to reinforce the sustainability strategy, each in their own way and within their individual work areas. For our employees to truly live the values behind the Corporate Responsibility (CR) philosophy, we focus on training awareness building through group-wide CR Days and open dialogue, as well as brand identification.
    The past two CR Days focused on ‘Saving Paper’ and ‘Water and Tourism’. Kuoni also conducted its first ever global employee survey in December 2010. Employees in all Business Units were given the opportunity to provide detailed feedback on their level of satisfaction with their current job and working environment. Kuoni plans to conduct a similar survey annually.

    Sustainable Supply Chain

    Fostering sustainability in the supply chain is one of the most effective ways for Kuoni to promote the values underpinning its Corporate Responsibility strategy in the long term. The approach to sustainable supply chains involves a wide range of stakeholders, including the internal Procurement and Production Unit, industry partners in the steering committee of the Travelife Sustainability System, hotel partners, NGOs and international organisations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). Kuoni not only seeks to secure the commitment of all of its suppliers to the Supplier Code of Conduct but also gauges the sustainability of its top 300 hotel partners through Travelife audits. We also actively support them in enhancing their human rights policies and the working conditions of their employees as well as environmentally friendly business operations through knowledge transfer. We actively endorse those of our hotel partners with the highest sustainability performance – those awarded by Travelife – to our customers and aim at further increasing the numbers of these ‘sustainable outperformers’ in the supply chain. Kuoni thereby not only creates greater market value for sustainable tourism in general, but also greater benefits for the local communities at the destinations.

    Kuoni takes strong pride in the relationships it has built with its customers. And it is committed to seeing these relationships continue to grow toward responsible travel and sustainable tourism. Besides generally improving its product line via knowledge transfer workshops and the sustainability audits implemented by Travelife, particular attention is also paid to customers who have expressed wishes for sustainable travel packages. The Institute of Tourism at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in collaboration with Kuoni, has conducted a broad study regarding customer demand in early 2011. The aim was to better gauge the demand and degree of understanding of clients regarding sustainable travel. It was established that 22% of customers consider sustainability as one of the top three deciding factors when booking travel packages. Kuoni strives to continually increase its portfolio of sustainable products, including those featured in the sustainable travel programme, ananea. Sustainable travel has also been promoted through several groundbreaking marketing campaigns, including as part of the Zurich Film Festival and by offering flight emission offsets to customers. Kuoni even provides tips on how everyone can travel more sustainably online.

    All human beings are born free and equal in terms of dignity and rights. These words from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights crystallize Kuoni’s motivation in its strategic pillar of Human Rights. Increasingly, corporations are expected not only to comply with human rights standards, but to make a positive contribution to their further development and mitigate any abuse. Kuoni demonstrates its conviction by focusing its efforts on areas the company can influence most: protecting children from sexual exploitation and helping to establish fair working conditions at destinations. To this end, Kuoni directs policy dialogue within ‘The Code’, builds awareness on child sex tourism, supports vocational training and educational programs and collaborates with its suppliers. To raise public awareness, Kuoni also contributed to the BBC World documentary film focused on child exploitation in Kenya, ‘End Human Trafficking Now’.

    Environmental Stewardship

    Environmental issues, such as those dealing with climate change impacts and preserving biodiversity, are important challenges for the tourism industry. As John Muir, a well-known author and early conservationist, once wrote, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” As the boundary between humanity and the environment becomes ever more blurred, we have greater capacity to damage and destroy or to manage and Save the Beauty SP8. We therefore have the responsibility to minimize the negative impacts of our business on the environment, while at the same time enhancing our positive actions towards life in general. Kuoni focuses on concrete actions and pilot projects related to climate change, for example coral reef protection, waste management, water protection and biodiversity as well as facilitating the transfer of knowledge on environmental management to our hotel partners. In addition, Novair, the charter airline operated by Kuoni Scandinavia, has been involved in different projects that have significantly reduced flight emissions.
